Staying Warm When It's Cold

Happy Wednesday!

I live right outside of Philadelphia, so the past two days I was hunkered down in the house thanks to Hurricane Sandy.  Thankfully we never lost power, didn't have any damage to the house and only had to deal with minor water in our crawl space.  It was nothing a towel couldn't fix.  Needless to say, things are starting to get back to normal.  Was anyone else affected?

Since the temperature has dropped drastically, it's that time of year to bring out the blankets, crank up the heat and start the coffee brewing. (Realistically, though, I brew coffee all year long!)

I was contacted by Craft Coffee to see if I would be interested in spreading the word about their company.  Disclaimer - I did not receive any sampling or compensation - this is just a company I think deserves a shout-out!

According to the company, Craft Coffee "turns coffee drinkers into coffee lovers" with their monthly subscription.  Basically, you receive three roasters each month when you sign up for a subscription.  One of my favorite parts about the company is the way their testing panel works.  Check it out:

"... [T]o bring you truly only the most excellent coffees available each month, we place every coffee we sample into a anonymous brown bag. Our expert tasting panel knows only the country where the coffee was grown and the date it was roasted. Without the distraction of packaging and branding, we can focus squarely on finding truly outstanding coffees for you - by taste!
The results are amazing. Sometimes the roasters with the best reputation have the best brews, and sometimes they don't. This leads us to feature coffees from tiny upstarts as well as more established artisan roasters."

Wanna find out more?  Check out this video-

I also have some awesome news to share - if you decide to purchase a subscription, enter the promo code weighpromo, which will give you 20% off of your first month.  The code will be valid for two weeks.

Have a coffee lover on your holiday list?  This might be just the thing to give them!

Question of the Day:
Are you a coffee drinker?

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thursday!

Today, I'm thankful for what I read in Self magazine on my way into work.  Their last page is called "A Moment for Yourself" and it's one of my favorite parts of the magazine.  Here's what's in the November issue (the text is also typed below the picture in case it's too hard to read):

"Make your escape
You are not your to-do list.  You are not your have-tos or must-dos.  You are not your job.  Although your first waking thoughts likely focus on the needs of others and all the things you want to accomplish, you are, most important, yourself.  Take time every day to remember that - even if it means running away from everyone and everything you love so you come back refreshed and recharged.  The world can wait.  You shouldn't have to."

This was just the reminder I needed today!

Question of the Day:
What are you thankful for?

Until next time!

I Like Big Sticks.....

....and I cannot lie.  You're welcome for getting that song stuck in your head.

I started a new course yesterday called the Principles of Obesity Economics.  It's offered for free from Coursera, and although you don't get any college credit when you complete the class, you do get a certificate of completion in addition to learning some interesting information.  There are tons of courses you can take, so if you're interested, head on over to check it out!

Listening to lectures during my blogging time made me invisible yesterday in the blog world.  But have no fear, I'm here to give you a recap of the weekend and I'm sure you're all sitting on the edge of your seats just waiting to read this post....haha

On Sunday the hubby and I took the little guy to the park (which is really just a college campus with lots of open space).  It's so beautiful there, especially during this time of the year.

So the name for the blog post comes from the simple fact that the little guy loves sticks almost as much as he loves chocolate cake.  He was super excited when he found one large stick that could be broken down into two sticks.

He kept telling me that the sticks were his canes and that they helped him to walk, like his GiGi (my grandmom).

One of my favorites from the day is the one below for the simple fact that it's a picture of our shadows.  Yeah, I'm a dork like that!

ChapStick Giveaway Time!

Happy Friday!

I can't think of a better way to celebrate Friday than to host a giveaway.

I wouldn't consider myself a make-up person.  I love taking the time to do my make-up when I have a special occasion or something but on a day-to-day basis, I'll choose an extra 5 minutes of sleep over putting on make-up.

With that being said, though, I am a lip gloss hoarder.  I always have some type of lip gloss on me at all times and when I find something I like, I'll buy a few of them and stash them in my work bag, my pocketbook and on the dresser in my room.  I'm kinda crazy that way.

I was really excited when I was contacted and asked if I wanted to review some ChapStick products. Whenever I see the name ChapStick, I'm immediately transported to my school years where I would carry around "insert newest flavor here" of ChapStick in my uniform pocket.

I literally jumped up and down when the package came in the mail.  I'm that much of a nerd!    Inside the box was a ChapStick towel, a make-up bag and two varieties of ChapStick - ChapStick Sport Ready and ChapStick Moisturizer Raspberry Creme.

Disclosure: “The ChapStick® product, information and gift have been provided by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.”

I opened up the Raspberry Creme first and started using it immediately.  True to ChapStick fashion, it smelled delicious!  I really enjoyed using this product because of the moisturizer in it.  Around this time of the year, my lips start to dry out and crack.  This ChapStick has SPF 15 as well as aloe and Vitamin E, which has helped keep my lips smooth.

I've tried the Sport Ready ChapStick and I really enjoyed that too - particularly because it has a clip top which makes it convenient to clip onto my keys, water bottle or anywhere else when I don't have pockets.  Not having to dig around to find my ChapStick is extremely helpful!

One of the best parts about this entire thing?  I've got a goodie package to give away to a lucky reader as well!  The gift package will contain a ChapStick Towel, ChapStick Sport Ready and ChapStick Moisturizer Raspberry Creme.

All you have to do is answer the Question of the Day.  A winner will be chosen on Wednesday, October 24th.  Good luck!

What's your favorite type of ChapStick or lip gloss?

The Cat's Out of the Bag

Happy Wednesday!

A couple of days ago, Jenn from Slim Shoppin asked me if I would like to be featured on her weight loss success story page.  I was honored and couldn't wait to answer her questions.  Yesterday, the post went live (here it is!) and, while I was more than excited to share my story with people who I don't "know" in the internet world, I wasn't sure whether or not I should share it on my Facebook page.  I had a debate with myself.  Don't get me wrong - I feel that I own my weight loss and all that comes with it.  It's not who I am, but it does have a huge part in my daily life.  What I struggled with was letting the "world" know that I have a blog.  Most of my family and close friends know about it, but there are others who simply had no idea.  (Even my best friend had no clue- hi best friend if you're reading!)   It's not that I'm ashamed or have any reason to hide, but blogging isn't something that comes up in my every day conversations, so I don't talk a lot about it.  There's something about openly discussing it that makes me feel vulnerable.  I mean this is my outlet and the place where I sometimes share pretty personal things.  Did I really want to open myself up to everyone I actually know?

So, what did I decide to do?  Yesterday, I let the cat out of the bag and shared the post with my Facebook friends.  People I knew from college, neighbors, friends, "friends" from high they know.

You know what?  It wasn't so bad.  The outpouring of love and support is overwhelming.  I don't know why I held back for so long.  It feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders and that I can breathe in the crisp, fresh air....and it feels fantastic.

So Jenn.....thanks so much for the opportunity! I really appreciate it!

Question of the Day:

For those of you who are bloggers, are you "open" with your blog?

Until next time!

Fun-Filled Weekend

Happy Monday!

This weekend was busy, but it was so much fun.

My cousin Allison turned 17 on Saturday and my Aunt and Uncle had a birthday party for her.  My niece and nephew were there, which is always fun for the little guy.

The little guy and the nephew are about a year apart and he idolizes his older cousin.  It's so fun to see them interact.

My favorite picture from Saturday night is the one below.  This one makes me smile so much that the sides of my mouth hurt!

On Sunday the little guy wanted to decorate his pumpkin.  He spent lots of time analyzing which colors would go best where and enjoyed scribbling all over it.

Before his afternoon nap, the hubby and I took the little guy to a local college with lots of places for him to run around. It was really nice because we basically had the place to ourselves and the little guy was able to run free.  Whenever he plays around our house, we're constantly holding his hand to make sure he doesn't run out into the street, so it was nice to let him explore the grounds on his own.

I'm not quite sure how kids have so much energy.  When we got home, all three of us took a nap.  We were all exhausted!

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thursday!

Today, I'm thankful that I was able to spend some quality time with the little guy yesterday.  We spent the day playing outside, picking up sticks and....oh yeah.....eating tastykakes.

This was the little guy's smile after he ate his first chocolate tastykake.  Needless to say, he's been asking for them ever since.

A Very Super Birthday

Happy Monday!

On Saturday we celebrated John's 2nd birthday with our families.  He had a "Super Why" theme.  Super Why is a show on PBS that involves reading and letters and the little guy absolutely loves it.

One of John's favorite gifts was a Barney doll that sings.  His Gigi (my grandmom) bought it for him and now, two days later, he still holds onto it for dear life.  I get the stink eye every time I go near it.  Trust me, buddy, I don't want your Barney doll!

John and his GiGi

The cake was a big hit and I think the little guy ate a piece of cake about the size of his head.  I may or may not have done the same thing.

All of that sugar combined with all of the excitement made for one sleepyhead on the ride home.

All in all it was a fantastic day!

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thursday!

Today, I'm thankful for the short work week.  I was off yesterday for the little guy's birthday and today I'm leaving a little bit early because he has his two year check-up.

The part I'm not so excited about is that he gets some shots today.  Yikes!! Here's to hoping that they aren't so bad.

Oh yes, and before I forget - the winner of the Yoplait giveaway is Jenn@slim-shoppin.  Jenn, send me an e-mail ( with your mailing address and I'll contact the appropriate people.  Congrats!

A Very Special Birthday

Dear John,

Today you are two years old.  Happy birthday, my sweet baby boy.  It's hard to think that this was our reality just two years ago.

Your Uncle Kevin and Uncle Eric on the day you were born

I remember the first time I heard you cry and I cried with you.  Even though the nurse was only giving you a bath, I couldn't wait until I was able to hold you and make you stop crying.  The moment we met, I knew I was changed for life and would always feel love like I could never ever imagine.

While I was home with you, I liked to document everything you even captured my heart when you yawned.

Everyone would tell me what a good baby you were and I had to agree.  I mean really, you were the happiest baby I knew and you took everything in stride....even when I put you in outfits that I thought were absolutely adorable.  Looking back on this, you may think otherwise.

It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating your first birthday.  You still had that baby look to you and I couldn't wait for what was in store as you continued to grow.

So what did you do during that year?  Well, my sweet child, you grew up.....a lot.  You started talking in full sentences.  You began to feed yourself.  Your personality began to peek through and now you are someone I can reason with.

The one thing I hope you never lose is your compassion.  You are the kindest, gentlest and most caring boy I have ever met.

Never lose your sense of wonder.  At the moment, you love to explore sticks, grass, leaves and anything that can be found on the ground.

You love to laugh. A lot.  I don't think I'll ever tire of your belly laughs.

Barney is one of your favorites, and when we met him over the summer, you couldn't get enough of him.  A big purple dinosaur is enough to freak out mommy, but you?  You wouldn't stop giving Barney hugs.

Your newest thing is trying to walk in my shoes.  You chose mommy's shoes with the heel on them and you walk better in them that I can most of the time.

John, I'm so honored and blessed to have you in my life.  I don't know where I'd be if you hadn't crept into my life two years ago.

I hope you have the happiest of birthdays.

I love you so much!

Giveaway Time!

Happy Monday!

Since I've been in a funk lately with all of the crazy house stuff going on, I've decided it as time to do a giveaway.  That ought to brighten things up around here, right?

Disclosure:  The product, gift pack, information, and additional sample have been provided by Yoplait through MyBlogSpark.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of yogurt, especially greek yogurt.  Even though it's more expensive, it leaves me feeling more full, so sometimes it's worth the extra splurge.  One of the things I don't like about greek yogurt is that it's higher in points than regular yogurt.  When I learned that Weight Watchers teamed up with Yoplait for a 2 pointsplus greek yogurt, I was beyond excited.  I tried the Mixed Berry flavor and it was delicious!

So, what's in it for the lucky winner of this giveaway?

1 Yoplait Light VIP coupon
1 Yoplait Greek 100 VIP coupon
Yoga ball
Water bottle
Work-out towel

I'm using the picture that was provided because I didn't have the chance to take a picture with the work that's going on in the house.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying the yoga ball.  I've always wanted one and I try to use it as much as possible!

To enter this giveaway, please answer the Question of the Day below.  (U.S. residents only, please!)

A winner will be chosen on Thursday, October 4th.

Question of the Day:
What's your favorite yogurt flavor?

Until next time!
